Liverpool FC transfer gossip: Rodgers lauds Balotelli; Lavezzi could chose Juventus; Reus has release clause

Italy's Mario Balotelli (9) heads the ball past England's Gary Cahill (5) and goalkeeper Joe Hart.

Liverpool FC boss Brendan Rodgers has lauded Italian striker Mario Balotelli and sparked rumours that he is a potential transfer target for the Reds, reports The Metro.

Liverpool have been linked with a number of forwards after the deal to sign Loic Remy fell through and Rodgers praised Balotelli in the build-up to the clash with AC Milan tonight.

The Reds boss said: "Balotelli has all the qualities. He’s 6’3”, he’s quick, his touch is terrific, he can score goals and he’s still so young.

"I saw that in this time at Inter as a young player and obviously going to Manchester City when we had a real close eye on him there.

"He’s a big talent."

The Metro report that the Italian international is available for around £14m and Rodgers admission could mean the Reds soon make a move for the madcap frontman.

Another option to strengthen Liverpool's striking options could be PSG hitman Ezequiel Lavezzi.

The Independent reports that the Reds are keen on the 29-year-old Argentinian international, who has spent to years at the French champions after moving from Napoli.

They report that Lavezzi would cost around £18m but Liverpool may struggle to complete a deal due to the striker's desire to move back to Italy with Juventus.

Lavezzi has won the French title twice in a row with PSG since making the move to the Parc des Princes.

Dortmund star Marco Reus has a £35m release clause in his contract. That's the latest from TalkSport .

They welcomed German football expert James Thorgood onto the show yesterday and he explained that Dortmund will have no choice but to let Reus leave should a team meet the £35m fee.

However he admitted that Liverpool would have to convince Reus that the project at Anfield was one worth leaving Germany for.

Rodgers impressed with Coates contribution during Reds tour of America

Uruguayan defender didn't play for Liverpool last season after suffering cruciate injury

Sebastian Coates in action against Olympiacos

Brendan Rodgers has praised the contribution of Sebastian Coates during Liverpool FC's pre-season after the Uruguayan's return from a long injury lay-off.

Coates missed the entirety of last season at Anfield after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament when on international duty in August 2013, moving to Nacional on loan in January to aid his recovery.

The 23 year old's future has been in doubt following the £20m signing of Dejan Lovren – but the Reds boss believes he has shown his qualities over the pre-season period.

“He is a player that played in the team when I first came into the club, he played in some of the league games and European games, then was out of the team,” said Rodgers.

“He was very unfortunate to have had a bad injury which put him out for a while, but he went away on loan last season, got himself fit again and he's come back and done really well at pre-season.

“He's done very, very well. He's a big boy but he can play football. Lovely touch, lovely technique but he can pass the ball, and he can be aggressive.”

Coates started in Rodgers first league home game against Manchester City but only made 12 appearances that season.

After recovering from injury and forcing his way into Uruguay's World Cup squad this summer, Rodgers concedes the player may not make receive a satisfactory amount of playing time at Liverpool.

“He's been at the club for a few years and the question has to be asked whether he gets enough games that will satisfy his own personal need, because he's a talent,” added Rodgers.

“He's a real good guy as well, a humble man, never cries about not playing and accepts as a professional he won't play in every game.

“But he's worked hard to get fit after his injury last season, he now looks fit and he's done well in the games so we'll see what the rest of the summer holds.”

Coates impressed during Liverpool's penalty shoot out win over Manchester City in New York on Wednesday as the Reds continue their preparation ahead of the new season.

Speaking in the Bank of America Stadium – the home of the Carolina Panthers – ahead of Saturday's game with AC Milan, Rodgers also revealed he remains interested in bringing new players to the club.

Liverpool's manager Brendan Rodgers and Joe Allen speak to the media at a press conference inside the Bank of America stadium in Downtown Charlotte.

“We won't have too much business to be done but we have a few areas we want to strengthen,” he said. “It's just purely on the back of us having a really thin squad last season, we were very short and it was incredible what they achieved last year.

“But they need help and assistance, because we have the belief we can go on and do well in all the competitions.”

The Northern Irishman also praised the talents of Mario Balotelli. The former Manchester City striker, now the spearhead of Milan's attack, has been linked with a move back to the Premier League.

“He's got all the qualities, all the talent – he's six foot three, his touch is terrific, he can score goals, and still so young,” said Rodgers.

“He's a player if his focus and concentration is right and he leads the lifestyle of a top player, then he can play for any team in the world.”

Meanwhile, Joe Allen says the fixture against Milan is the perfect preparation ahead of this season's Champions League campaign.

Liverpool's manager Brendan Rodgers and Joe Allen speak to the media at a press conference inside the Bank of America stadium in Downtown Charlotte.

“To play against teams the likes of Milan is brilliant experience, there's history between the two clubs and I'm really looking forward to my first taste of Champions League football this season,” said the midfielder.

“It's a dream of mine and a target when I joined the club that I'd hopefully get the chance.

“It's a club that belongs in the competition and everyone will agree they're looking forward to getting that under way.”

Rodgers convinced Liverpool coming so close last season is 'only the beginning'

Demba Ba gives Chelsea the lead after Steven Gerrard's slip

It was an afternoon Kopites would dearly love to forget.

The momentum built up by a remarkable run of 11 successive league wins had putLiverpool FC on the brink of their first title for 24 years. Just seven points from their final three matches and the long wait for a 19th top-flight crown was over.

But on April 27 the dream turned into a nightmare. Chelsea gate-crashed the Anfield party and Manchester City took full advantage.

Defeat cut deep but Brendan Rodgers has no wish to erase that emotional roller-coaster from his players’ memory banks.

Rather than fear the consequences of that heartbreak he insists the experience will prove to be a stepping stone to glory this season.

The message sent from America to the club’s title rivals is clear – Liverpool aren’t going anywhere.

“Remembering that feeling, that’s what drives you,” said Rodgers, whose side face AC Milan at Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium tonight.

“The Chelsea game was the one. A draw even at Palace was alright.

“But if you look at the history of the winning teams they have always gone close. You look at the United team that won it in 1993, they came close in 1992 when they just lost it to Leeds.

“They came back the following year and won it. That set up an era of winning for them. They won the Champions League (in 1999) and they just missed out two years before.

“Part of the process of winning is being able to lose like we did. What it has done with this team and this group, it has made us even more unified and stronger to be more successful in the future.

“We have got players that have had disappointments in their career and picked themselves up again.

“For me there was no real hangover, I was just so proud of how we as a whole club got together last season. The supporters talking about making them dream and there is no negative in it for me.

“We went so close but it is only the beginning for us. I’m super hungry to be a champion and succeed and we have shown we have the credentials to do that.

“The Premier League is going to be as competitive as ever. There will be six odd teams who can challenge for it but we’ve reinforced the squad and we will go into it with even more belief with a group of young players who are hungry too.”

Liverpool Target Moreno and Manquillo

Alberto Moreno: Transfer target for Liverpool

Liverpool are closing on a double deal for Sevilla left-back Alberto Moreno and Atletico Madrid right-back Javi Manquillo, Sky sources understand.

Chief executive Ian Ayre has flown to Spain to try and complete the transfers, which would take Liverpool's summer spending through the £100m barrier if completed.

The deal for Manquillo is reported to be a loan, possibly for two seasons, with a permanent deal worth in the region of £6m following at the end of that.

Moreno, who like Manquillo, has also been linked with Arsenal this summer, is expected to cost the Reds £20m.

Boss Brendan Rodgers has enjoyed a fruitful summer with six signings already completed at the cost of around £90m; Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren have arrived from Southampton along with Lille striker Divock Origi, Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Emre Can and Benfica winger Lazar Markovic.

Rodgers hinted after the penalty shootout win over Manchester City on Thursday morning that more deals were in the works.

"We still have some business to do," he said.

"We have some positions that we want to fill so by the end of August we’ll have a strong squad to go forward with."

Jordan targets more goals in 2014-15

Jordan Henderson has revealed that he aims to become a regular on the scoresheet this season after bagging a wonderful equaliser in last night's victory over Manchester City.

Liverpool drew 2-2 against their Premier League rivals in front of a packed Yankee Stadium in New York, but won out on penalties - giving the Reds an excellent chance of progressing to the final of the International Champions Cup.

With Henderson on target, both during the match and from the spot in the ensuing shoot-out, the Reds No.14 admitted that adding more goals is high on his personal agenda for the upcoming season.

"Definitely; I've got to chip in with more goals from midfield - as much as I can - so hopefully I can do a lot more of that this season," Henderson told Liverpoolfc.com.

'I want more goals this season'

The midfielder also described his well-taken goal, and the pressures of taking a penalty in front of the wonderful supporters who had gathered in the historic stadium.

He added: "I think Studge [Sturridge] got in well after a good ball from Philippe [Coutinho], then it just fell to me and I managed to hit it on target - fortunately it went in.

"[There was] a little bit of pressure [when taking the penalty]. Obviously, you want to score, and it's against a top-class goalkeeper in Joe Hart so it was nice to put that one away."

After defeating Olympiacos in the opening match of the tournament, Henderson insisted the team's approach was not altered despite facing Premier League opposition, then set his sights reaching Monday's final in Miami.

He said: "We just approached the game like we always do: give 100 per cent, make sure we're pressing high and hard, try to keep the ball and penetrate the lines in behind. I thought we did that better in the second-half and we got our rewards for it.

"Hopefully we can win the last game and everybody will be looking forward to going to Miami and getting great experience - so, fingers crossed we can beat Milan."

Austin Powers: I love our style

Being groovy is nothing new to Mike Myers; it comes with the territory of his on-screen alter-ego Austin Powers.

But it's the style and swagger of his beloved Liverpool that has impressed the International Man of Mystery, who couldn't turn down the opportunity to be a part of the sea of red inside Yankee Stadium on Wednesday for the International Champions Cup fixture against Manchester City.

Wearing his brand new home shirt and with his own home-made banner in-hand, Myers, who visited Anfield last November, spoke to LFC TV before the game about the exciting brand of football that has for so long been the hallmark of the Reds.

"Liverpool is an attacking club, and a lot of my American fans had criticism during the World Cup because teams didn't want to commit," he said.

"But what I love about Liverpool, traditionally, is how we move the ball about, how we attack, attack, attack and being on the opposition when we don't have the ball."

Looking forward to the game, Myers also said: "I can't believe it, this has been on my calendar for a very long time and I'm very excited."

Manchester City 2-2 Liverpool: Simon Mignolet the hero as Reds win on spot-kicks

Goals, attacking football, a sudden-death finish and a costly slip from Steven Gerrard. Yankee Stadium saw last season’s Premier League title race between Liverpool and Manchester City rolled into one game on Wednesday night.

When the dust (and there was a little too much of it beneath the grass laid over parts of this famous baseball stadium) had settled, Liverpool were the winners as they beat the Premier League champions in a penalty shootout two months after losing the title on the last day of the season.

You had to question City’s appetite to reach the final of the International Champions Cup in Miami on Monday and shave a couple of days off their preparations for the Community Shield against Arsenal when Aleksandar Kolarov, Jesus Navas and Yaya Toure – making his first appearance since threatening to quit the champions – failed with their first three penalty attempts, leaving Lucas Leiva to seal victory for Liverpool.

Liverpool: Jones, Kelly (Johnson 46), Toure, Coates (Sakho 76), Enrique (Robinson 46), Gerrard (Lucas 76), Henderson, Allen (Can 65), Coutinho, Lambert (Sterling 46), Sturridge.

Manchester City: Caballero (Hart 46), Clichy (Richards 70), Kolarov, Boyata, Nastasic, Fernando, Navas, Zuculini, Milner (Sinclair 46), Jovetic (Yaya Toure 70), Dzeko (Iheanacho 46).

Subs not used: Nasri, Negredo, Garcia, Rodwell, Rekik, Silva, Wright, Lawlor, Huws, Guidetti, Bossaerts, Denayer.

Goals: Jovetic 53, 67.

Booked: Coates

Attendance: 49,653

These two teams will battle for greater prizes this season but, for now, the Merseysiders go on to face AC Milan in Charlotte on Saturday with a chance to clinch top place in their group and set up the possibility of a final showdown with Louis van Gaal’s Manchester United in Florida of all places. That opportunity could still be open to City as well but only if they beat Olympiacos in Minneapolis and hope for another Liverpool slip-up.

Brendan Rodgers’s side looked to be slipping to defeat when Stevan Jovetic continued his rich vein of form by twice putting City ahead in the second half, but Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling struck back. A shootout would not even have been necessary had second-half substitute Joe Hart not made three outstanding saves and a last-gasp Sterling effort been incorrectly ruled out for offside.

This mecca of baseball will be home to New York City when they launch in Major League Soccer next season and it certainly made for a curious venue for football, with the pitch shoe-horned awkwardly at an angle into the stadium and sandy turf laid over the baseball quadrant in one corner of the pitch.

Any soccer sceptics in the crowd or watching on television, meanwhile, would hardly have been won over by what was on show in the first 45 minutes before they were finally given something to shout about in the second half.

It was competitive and entertaining but Manuel Pellegrini and Rodgers will be pulling their hair out if their players defend like this when City entertain Liverpool in their first home game of the season next month.

The word before kick-off was that Liverpool were rather less concerned about getting to Monday’s final than City but you would not have known that by the start made by the men in red who had by far the most support in the stadium.

Red sea: Liverpool fans pack inside the Yankee Stadium in New York

Liverpool made five changes to the team that beat Olympiacos, with new £20million signing Lazar Markovic ruled by injury, while City rather surprisingly gave starts to Edin Dzeko and James Milner - their first World Cup players to feature on tour – who played the first 45 minutes.

Dzeko was soon involved, playing a clever one-two with Jovetic who cut back inside Kolo Toure but made a meal of going down under a non-existent challenge from Martin Kelly which did not impress Canadian referee Silviu Petrescu.

The Bosnian had the ball in the net with a neat finish after 26 minutes but it was correctly ruled out for a marginal offside, while Navas and Bruno Zuculini both failed to beat Brad Jones from promising positions.

At the other end, Philippe Coutinho drilled narrowly wide from the edge of the box before Rickie Lambert wasted by far the best chance of the first half.

+19

On the move: City's Edin Dzeko tries to take on Coates

+19

Denied: Rickie Lambert's point-blank header was well saved by Willy Caballero

The England striker had time to pick his spot as he rose to meet Jordan Henderson’s cross at the far post after quarter of an hour but aimed his header straight at Willy Caballero who blocked with his shoulder from point-blank range.

Caballero was replaced by Hart at half-time in one of a number of changes by both teams and the England international was called into action within five minutes, rushing out to deny Liverpool substitute Jack Robinson as the youngster was played in on goal.

City were ahead moments later and not for the first time in recent months it was a moment that left Liverpool captain Gerrard rather embarrassed.

Navas outstripped Robinson down the right and Gerrard made a complete hash of blocking his cross as it squirmed through his legs and fell to Jovetic who touched the ball past Simon Mignolet from a few yards out.

Hart made another fantastic save as he came out to block Coutinho’s effort when Gerrard’s pass deflected off Fernando and into the Brazilian’s path moments later, but he could not keep out Henderson’s equaliser in the 59th minute.

Sterling played in Daniel Sturridge and although Dedryck Boyata got a foot in to deny the England striker, the ball ran loose to Henderson who curled it into the top corner.

Zuculini should have restored City’s lead when he fired against the bar with the goal gaping, but their second arrived in the 67th minute and again Liverpool’s defending was in question.

+19

Spot on: Lucas scored his penalty as Liverpool edged past Manchester City

+19

Back in action: Kolo Toure on Liverpool duty again after Ivory coast's World Cup woes

Jovetic played the ball out wide for Navas to cross and when Kelechi Iheanacho’ s low shot struck Jovetic’s legs, the Montenegrin reacted faster than Sebastian Coates to prod the ball past Mignolet.

It was Jovetic’s fourth goal in two games following his double against Milan in Pittsburgh.

Hart thought he had done enough to secure victory when he did brilliantly to keep out Mamadou Sakho’s header, but Liverpool snatched another equaliser five minutes from time as Lucas produced an exquisite touch to play Sturridge’s cross into the Sterling and he guided the ball past his England colleague.

Sterling was denied a wonderful winner with the last kick of the game as he was incorrectly flagged for offside before beating Hart with another delightful curling finish, but any sense of injustice was erased by the penalty shootout.

City’s first three efforts were pretty woeful, Kolarov firing over and Toure and Navas seeing their efforts saved by Mignolet before Iheanacho produced an amazingly cool finish for a teenager.

Sturridge also blazed his penalty over the bar but Emre Can and Henderson had put Liverpool in the driving seat before Lucas converted the winning spot-kick.

Steven Gerrard opens up about 'worst three months of his life' as Liverpool captain reflects on Chelsea slip and England failure

The next 30 minutes are going to be a challenge for Steven Gerrard. From the moment he walks into a meeting room at Liverpool’s plush hotel, he knows where the conversation will head.

As soon as he puts his phone and wash bag on the floor and settles into a chair, he knows it will be necessary to revisit the events of April 27.

That, of course, was the day Liverpool’s exhilarating surge to win a first league title since 1990 came asunder; the day the fates conspired against him.

Scroll down for videos

+18

Perspective: Steven Gerrard admits he has suffered the 'worst three months of his life' after Liverpool's Premier League failure and England's miserable World Cup performances

+18

Costly: Gerrard's untimely slip which allowed Chelsea striker Demba Ba through to score at Anfield was a deciding factor in Manchester City beating Liverpool to the Premier League title

+18

Fine margins: Gerrard had been inspiration in lifting Liverpool to a position to challenge for the title, only to see their bid fall apart at the end

+18

More misery: Gerrard breaks down in tears after England are eliminated from the World Cup at the group stage

He had set himself to control a ball from Mamadou Sakho when he slipped and Chelsea striker Demba Ba sped away. Thousands of dreams died as Chelsea won 2-0.

With some players, reopening old wounds would be strictly off limits but Gerrard is different. He has never shied away from the difficult subjects and, even though this is particularly painful, he is not about to start now.

So how was it after Chelsea?

‘You are a brave man asking this question,’ comes the reply, his eyes narrowing. ‘How do you think it was? You tell me.’

The worst day of your life?

‘There’s your answer.’

Once the issue is broached, Gerrard opens up. Few people in football speak with such searing honesty and, in some ways, this is cathartic. It has been a demanding, draining period in his professional life but speaking about it now can bring closure.

‘It was cruel,’ he says. ‘I haven’t lost my man at a set piece. I haven’t missed a penalty. I haven’t made a bad pass or a mistake. Every single person on the planet slips at some point in their life, whether it is on a set of stairs, on the floor or whatever.

‘For me, it happened on the pitch at a really bad moment. But, you know, over the course of 38 games, a lot happens for you and against you and that determines whether you win the league or not. But that happened at a really crucial time and I have to face that.

‘Football isn’t always going to be celebrations, highs and winning things and stuff like that. When you’re fighting for things at this level there are always going to be heartbreaks and disappointments and the last three months have been a massive disappointment, probably the worst of my life.

‘When you’re captain of this team, you can’t afford to feel sorry for yourself or mope around. Everyone in this group looks to me to see what sort of mood I’m in; to see how I am behaving round the place moving forward so I have to shake it off pretty quick.

‘And I will do. But I have to use it as a positive to drive me on. At 34 there is no possible way I am going to let the last three months be the things I remember moving forward. It’s important it finishes on a high.’

+18

We go again: Liverpool's preparations for the forthcoming season are well underway, with Raheem Sterling (second left) congratulated after scoring the winner against Olympiacos

+18

Close bond: Gerrard will be deployed as a 'quarterback' by manager Brendan Rodgers this season

As that moment was so dramatic, it has obscured how much Gerrard actually did to get Liverpool in a position to challenge Manchester City. His performances after he returned from a hamstring injury in January were exemplary, arguably as good as at any point during his stellar career.

He contributed 13 of Liverpool’s 101 Premier League goals, created another 15 and thrived in the deep-lying role Brendan Rodgers created for him. Rodgers has been raving on this tour of America how Gerrard will be his ‘quarterback’ and advancing years are no barrier to his importance.

There is, clearly, a bond between the captain and his manager and Rodgers was responsible for providing the crucial advice when he came to make a decision about his England career.

Though he still feels he could influence Roy Hodgson’s team, ending his 114-cap career after the World Cup felt right. He and Liverpool will now reap the benefits and it will also allow him to spend time with his girls — wife Alex and their three daughters: Lilly-Ella, Lexie and Lourdes.

Repeat performance? Liverpool will hope to once again challenge for the title as they did last season. Here, Philippe Coutinho is pictured celebrating his goal in the 3-2 win over Manchester City at Anfield

‘You sort of feel like you are lying to them all the time,’ Gerrard explains. ‘It’s difficult to say to them you are going away for four to six weeks. So you kind of lie and say you will only be gone a couple of weeks, then they are on the phone and on Facetime saying they want you home.

‘It does become difficult being away. I’ve done it for 14 years. I had to be fair to my family but also to Liverpool as well. To be fair to Brendan, when I had the chat with him, he said that if you want to carry on for England I can tailor your Liverpool games.

‘When I had the chat with him I was close to already knowing what I was going to do. When he said that my Liverpool games could be tailored then it made me go to 100 per cent with my decision because I don’t want my Liverpool games to be tailored.

‘I still want to be available, I want to be fresh and play at a high level for Liverpool for certainly one more season. We will have to wait and see if there are any more after that. I don’t feel like a weight has been lifted because I never saw it as a burden.

‘I used to love going down there, knowing I was going to be captain. Of course I’m going to feel fresher and benefit from not playing.

‘I don’t feel as if I could go to a tournament at 36 and be who I wanted to be. Everything was pointing towards calling it a day but I’m going to miss it.’

He will not, however, be dwelling on it as there are big challenges ahead and the words from another emotional moment in April will be in his mind. After Liverpool had beaten Manchester City, who they face tonight in a friendly here, Gerrard gathered his squad together.

‘We go again, exactly the same,’ he implored, demanding that focus be retained. He will say the same over the coming weeks as he starts to dream about finally getting his hands on the trophy he has coveted all his life. His faith in a squad that has lost Luis Suarez is unshakeable.

‘That was real, it was from my heart,’ said Gerrard. ‘I was emotional at the time as we had just beaten City. We were so close. It was a reminder to everyone that there was still work to do and as it proved there was. But I’ll keep going and I will go again.

‘We are a good team with a good manager, that is getting stronger. The confidence is rising in the dressing room and we have got to show that we are the real deal. We are not there to just make up the numbers.
